The Grinning Throat
By Kate Wiseman (ZunTold books)
Review by Katherin, The Kingston Academy Surrey
I found “The Grinning Throat” by Kate Wiseman truly captivating and among the best reads I’ve ever had. Once I started, I couldn’t stop. It’s set in Victorian London during the 19th century, near the River Thames, which adds depth to the story. I really found that Princess Magdalena is the most interesting character because she is a fierce princess who seems like she would be ‘a fragile egg’ at the start. Soon enough, they found out that she was the complete opposite. This was a thrilling book to read, a book where I learnt a lot of historical facts and how the poor lived. I really enjoyed it and definitely recommend it even to some people higher than my year group, because you cannot possibly put the book down.
Review by Matilda, Mordiford CE Primary School Hereford
This book is set in London in 1872. It is all about “mudlarking”, which means waiting for the tide to deposit new objects which may be valuable. Finding valuables by mudlarking is the only way to keep Joe (15) and Edie (13) from being sent to the dreaded workhouse. They sell all their mudlarking finds to Hempson, but they are starting to discover that he is not to be trusted and plays a part in a very sinister plot which risks the lives of many young girls.
The main character is Edie. I really loved the fact that she doesn’t seem the bravest at first, but underneath she is very strong! (Don’t judge a book by its cover!)
I enjoyed the fact that this book is set in the past but also how the past can keep showing itself to us if we look for it, and I learnt so much about how the world has changed, especially for girls!
I love it when you try to work out the ending of a story, but can’t guess what is going to happen. The book was jam packed with amazing description – I could really feel, smell and imagine Victorian London. It was also full of suspense. It stands alone to me because it is unlike any other book I have read.
I recommend children aged 10 to 12 read this book – you will love it! I normally love reading real-life history, but this has got me into reading historical fiction. It was the best book I have ever read!
