What can the artist Stanley Spencer tell us about the First World War?
Phil Arkinstall
The resource includes a sequence of three lessons that allow pupils to understand war artist Stanley Spencer’s perceived experiences of the First World War. It includes PowerPoints, painting resources, data capture sheets, a quiz and biographical accounts of the artist’s life. The central aims are to engage pupils with art and to see how a multi-disciplinary approach can broaden their appreciation of how something like war can be interpreted and presented to an audience. The final activity involves the creation of a visitor’s podcast for use at Sandham Memorial Chapel, the location of Spencer’s First World War murals.
