Exemplar Application 5: Secondary: Experienced teacher and head of department
Hugh Richards has taught history for 6 years and has recently been appointed head of department in a research school – a role that he thoroughly enjoys.
All applicants must supply an application form, CV and scanned copies of their relevant qualification certificates. These have not been supplied as part of this exemplar for data protection purposes. What follows is an exemplar of the 1000 word statement, supporting evidence and the CPD log that Hugh provided to support his application.
The CPD log must indicate at least 36 hours of history CPD undertaken over the last 12 months. This must be CPD undertaken rather than CPD the applicant has delivered. A wide range of activities are permissible as CPD. Please take a look at the exemplar CPD logs and our FAQs for guidance.
Hugh has submitted his statement in a similar way to Natalie in example 3 and has cited supporting evidence in brackets where appropriate. However, he has also sub-divided his statement into headings relating to his pedagogy, subject expertise and development priorities to provide a clearly structured and targeted statement.
The panel felt this to be a well organised and well-structured application. It contained an important combination of commitment to history learning and subject-specific professional development/pedagogical thinking in conjunction with the Research Schools emphasis on more generic research-based principles. Also noted was Hugh’s role within York Clio and strong evidence of his commitment to enriching history.
Attached below you will find Hugh’s 1000 word statement plus 15 pieces of evidence and a CPD log.
