Chartered Teacher FAQs
-
Where can I find the information and documents I need?
Once you have registered, you should allow up to 5 working days for your registration to be processed. All of the docuementation you need to apply is in this module. Once your registration is processed, you should log in to your HA account and click on My HA. You will find the Chartered Teacher file upload in your MyHA space. This is where you should upload your application.
-
Can I send an application by post?
Yes, you can. If you would rather print and send an application by post to reach us by the specified deadline, please send it to Mel Jones Ref CTHist, Historical Association, 59a Kennington Park Road, London SE11 4JH. Please note that if you are sending an application by post, we require 3 copies of every document in your application.
-
Do I need to supply address/contact details for my referees?
No, the reference is sufficient in the first instance. If we wish to speak to your referee, we will ask for contact details.
-
How should I choose my referees?
You will need two referees. One should be able to attest to your subject expertise. The other should be able to attest to your pedagogical subject expertise and your continued commitment to the development of both your subject knowledge and teaching. Please note that this should be someone in a position that is senior to yours, such as a line manager.
-
Do I need multiple copies of documents if I am uploading my application electronically?
No, you only need to supply 3 copies if you are sending a postal application
-
Can signatures be added electronically or does it need to be printed and signed?
Yes, you can add electronic signatures.
-
What should my evidence consist of?
You should only supply 6 pieces of evidence, but they need to demonstrate your subject /pedagogical expertise and your on-going commitment to development of both, so you need to choose carefully. The type of evidence you might supply will also differ according to your education phase and teaching experience/context. Please consult our CTHist Pathways document (on the application page) to find out more about the types of evidence that you might supply.
-
Should I use examination results as evidence?
For those secondary teachers applying, while there is no rule against using examination results as evidence, these are statistics and are fairly one dimensional in what they can be used for as evidence. For this reason, we advise that any examination results you wish to use as evidence are referenced and contextualised in your 1000 word statement and that you leave room for more multi-dimensional evidence to be used in your 6 pieces of evidence. If the panel particularly wish to see your examination results following reading your application, they will ask for them to be supplied.
-
Is there a way I can let my referee see my application without logging in to my HA account?
Unfortunately, there is not the facility on your My HA account to share resources with others. You will need to save your application to a memory stick or local shared file space in order to share it with your referee before the application is then uploaded into your My HA space.

What counts as CPD for my CPD log?
We recognise that getting subject-specific CPD is not always easy. The CPD log that you keep must consist of subject-specific CPD that you have undertaken (not CPD that you have delivered yourself – although this can of course be used as evidence of your contribution to supporting others’ professional learning). We recognise a wide variety of opportunities to benefit from history CPD. Below are some of the things that we might recognise along with an idea of the time allocation you might attach to it. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list. If you have a query about the appropriateness of particular CPD you have undertaken, please contact Mel Jones on melanie.jones@history.org.uk
CPD Type
Time Allocation
Full day face to face course
6 hours
2 day residential course
20 hours (also taking into account networking opportunities in the evening)

How should I present and lay out my application?
Please consult our application guidance document (on the application page) for details of how to put your application together. We suggest that you provide your CPD log and degree certificate scans as one document, then your application form as another, your statement as another and then your 6 pieces of evidence labelled 1 to 6. In your statement, we suggest that you provide a margin and when you are making statements, add the name of the piece of evidence that can verify this in the margin. There are also sample applications that you can view which will help to model some ways of setting an application out. You can view these here.

What is the six-month cycle timeline?
This is a rolling programme and you can join and submit at any time; however, the assessment windows are fixed each year in April/May and December.
Your CTHist registration allows for 2 assessment windows. If you miss the first, you can submit in the second. The following timeline is for a typical 6-month cycle.
If you have any queries about the process or application, please consult the rest of the module and our other FAQs on this page
- Steps 1-3 (Registration, Preparing Evidence, Application). First 3-5 months of assessment cycle.
- Step 4 (Preliminary check to application). Applications will be checked shortly after the deadline.
- Step 5 Application sent back for more evidence or forwarded as correct.
- Step 6 Assessment panel meets
- Step 7 Successful award or deferment. Next cycle launched at same time.
