The Book ‘Code name: Kingfisher’ is a very unique book as it switches from past to present so often. The book is describing the tragic tale of a little girl called Mila who is a jew during World War II. Her whole life is a life as she pretends to live as a cousin to a stranger who felt pity for the girl and her older sister. The book narrates the story of Mila while showing the present struggles of her granddaughter, Liv, who wants to build a relationship with her traumatised grandma. Some of the events in this book are based on real things that happened during the war which makes the book even more heartbreaking.
The writing in this book was just captivating! The characters were so believable that I actually cared for them. The book evoked emotions inside me and made me feel sympathetic towards Mila. It made me clench my fists at all those who took part in the ruining of the lives of innocent people across Europe. It also gave me an insight into what life was like for Jewish children in the 1940’s. Although this may seem like a mere children’s novel, this book has the potential to bring tears in the eyes of millions around the globe and inspire them. People should be fearless like Hannie, Mila and many more.
Favourite Quote: “I think the kingfisher was telling us to be true to ourselves, to shine bright even when the world seems dark and dangerous and full of shadows!

In the book Code Name Kingfisher, I found Mila the most intriguing as she had an aura around her and overall was portrayed as an amazing character. I have also learnt a lot from this book and about new things I never knew that hopefully now I could dive a bit deeper into, like the Nazis. I only knew a bit about the Jewish oppression before reading the book but now I truly see the injustice they had faced. I would 100% without a doubt in my mind recommend this to other fellow students so they could gain some more knowledge from this like I have. This book has inspired me to look into things more deeply.

This book was so good. It showed two sides of the story. One of present day and one from the past during war time. I loved switching from side to side of the story. And it really showed two points of view. In total, I would rate this a 9.5/10. I loved all of the characters and how at the end of the book it showed the kid characters all grown up. Such a great book. Would definitely recommend for enthusiastic readers who wants an interesting, engaging novel.
