Identity and History: Students from Germany and the UK

National Identity

Pride and Prejudice: in search of our national identities'

A project between The Mount and Millthorpe Schools in York and Philipp Melanchthon Gymnasium in Grünheide, Germany supported by UK-German Connection.

The York Independent State School partnership supported by UK-German Connection are running a project between two York schools and a school near Berlin called "Pride and Prejudice: in search of our national identities."  Students have been involved in after school activities and a meeting of all the group in York to date.

As part of this project students from both schools discussed how a study of history has influenced their sense of national identity and their understanding of each others national identities.

1. Introduction.

2. How has a study of history shaped our perceptions of our own national identity? (Both British and German students)

3. How has a study of history shaped your perceptions of Britain and the British? How has your visit to Britain shaped your perception of Britain and the British? (German Students)

4. How has a study of history shaped your perceptions of Britain and the British? (British students)

5. The British history curriculum has been critiscised for too much focus on the First and Second World War and the Cold War - should we put so much focus on these subjects? (Both British and German students)
