Dr Simon Sleight and Dr Ed Zychowicz-Coghill discuss how they have developed a community of teachers engaged in the teaching of history in and around the London area in approximately 30 schools with the aim of supporting transition from school to undergraduate history through the provision of resources, meetings, school talks, judging competitions and conferences for both teachers and their pupils. Simon and Ed highlight the importance of taking time to make personal connections with schools, establishing good communications (recognising the challenges of staff turnover in schools) and listening to the advice and responding to the interests and areas of need for history teachers and their pupils.  They also note that history teachers are highly receptive to introducing university-level techniques and materials into their classrooms and are very committed in preparing their pupils for university-level expectations. They argue that HEI academics could do more to understand the perspectives of history teachers and their pupils.
