Mystery of the Night Watchers is a book centred around the passing of Halley’s Comet in 1910 and the hysteria surrounding it. I would identify the book as being in the mystery genre and A.M. Howell skilfully creates the feeling of secrecy and uncertainty in such a way that hooked me. The book constantly leaves you wondering and adjusting your thoughts on the characters and plot as new information is carefully revealed. To summarise, the splendid mixture of accurate historical depiction and tense drama makes this an exquisite read, which I thoroughly recommend to anyone looking for a mysterious and gripping novel to peruse.

My favourite character is Nancy because she is brave and feels for other people who are in trouble. She also believes that people should not be treated meanly and they should not be afraid to stand up and say the thing that they believe. My least favourite character is the mayor because he was cruel and selfish as he tortured Mr Greenstone and took the money from the tickets that were supposed to go to charity. I learnt that even now there are still some people who prefer to live in the olden days to the modern day. I really enjoyed reading this book and I recommend it to anyone who feels strongly about injustice, but anyone could read it because it is a fabulous book!

I really enjoyed reading this book and the mysteries it provides for the reader, I think this book and its events are very unexpected which keeps the book interesting and the reader on edge. I love how this book is set in the 1900s giving it an old-fashioned, Edwardian tint.

I think that already from the beginning when their mother takes Nancy and Violet to meet their grandfather who they hadn’t met before you can tell this book is going to be full of unexpected turns and mysteries. The fact they can’t make themselves seen throws a new light on their mother’s actions, I had so many questions reading this and I couldn’t wait to find out.

My favorite character must be Nancy as she is so curious and adventurous. I think her life is so interesting and her family have been keeping so many secrets from her which she has only found out about now. I think she is just as curious as the reader, yet her number one priority is to keep her family safe and to save them no matter what she must do. I think Burch is also a top character in this book as he always helps Nancy in everything and anything. He is overall a very helpful person; for example, we see this when he misses school to help his parents in the Haberdashery shop.

Overall, I have really enjoyed this book and it must be one of the best books I have ever read. I think its thrilling events and finding revolutions makes the book very intriguing and entertaining. I also think it hooks the reader from the very first page so you can’t stop reading it and you have the want to just find out everything before you put the book back down again. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read an unpredictable book which keeps you on edge.

I found that Nancy and her grandfather were the most interesting characters. Nancy is very adventurous, and I felt she was a bit mischievous as she disobeyed her mother’s strict instructions to stay inside even though going out was partly the right thing to do. I thought her grandfather was also interesting because he revealed many life-changing secrets that he was keeping during the book about his troubling past.

I did not like Nancy’s mother very much at first, as she kept important details to herself when Nancy, Violet and their father could have helped. I also did not like the mayor because I felt the man was disrespectful and spread slander about certain people’s businesses so that he could get what he wanted.

Thirdly, this book was very educational, so I learned that in this particular town, they used a horse and cart as an ambulance and also learned about Halley’s comet in 1910. Finally, another thing I found out was that they used candles and oil lamps for lighting, as there was no electricity.

The time it was set in was interesting to me because the clothes that Nancy and Violet were dresses and long socks; they also wore nightgowns which are not very common these days. Some of the language was very old and old fashioned like fond and they always called their parents mother and father. They also ate tripe in the prison which we don't have nowadays.

Furthermore, the plot was very exciting as there as there were big unexpecting twists that affected the girls’ family in many different ways. At points, the plot was serious when big secrets were uncovered and some terrible problems occurred.

One of the parts that most stands out for me was when their grandfather came out of hiding and confronted the mayor, along with Mr Cavendish. As he was too afraid to do it before or Nancy and Violet arrived in Suffolk. Finally, I would recommend this book to other people because the plot was so exciting that I couldn't put it down! Whilst reading this book I found that you are learning, but it doesn't feel like it because it's so interesting and intriguing. My personal review of this book would be 5 stars. It was just amazing!
