Reflections on the residential: Helen Snelson, course leader
The People of 1381 HA Teacher Fellowship has commenced. It seemed unlikely as the year turned, but all participants were able to make it to the residential hosted in the lovely setting of Mansfield College, Oxford. The eight teachers spent an intense two days working with the academic project team. The academics shared their latest research, which is transforming what is known about the greatest popular rising in English history. The teachers were able to see the academics at work and to really get to understand both the latest research questions and the way the project team are seeking to answer these. It was a weekend of deep thinking, intense discussion and laughter.
Now the Fellowship programme moves into an online course phase for eight weeks before we meet again to plan how to share all our learning with colleagues and pupils. Over the summer, participants will be developing resources that will be freely shared via the HA and the People of 1381 website. In the meantime, there will shortly be the first of a series of www.onebighistorydepartment.com blogposts and it will explain why what we teach about 1381 in schools is a long way out of date and needs to change. Look out for these. Over the coming weeks, we'll also publish here some of the reflections and thoughts about thelr learning from the teacher fellows, so do check back for updates.
