British Women in the Nineteenth Century
Classic Pamphlet
Work, Family, Politics & the Law
A short pamphlet surveying the historical record of rather more than half the population of Britain over a period of a hundred years must of necessity be sketchy and incomplete. The great interest in history of women which has arisen in the last few decades has produced a great deal of lively and stimulating work, but in many crucial areas there is still a good deal of guesswork than scholarly investigation. This survey looks at work that has been done on some of the most important questions that concerned women in Britain during the last century, and suggests possible further reading. It can, however, only deal with a small selection of the many works available.
