Thinking about… the Partition of British India in August 1947

Shortly before midnight on 14 August 1947 Jawaharlal Nehru, leader of the Indian National Congress (the main nationalist organisation in British India), rose in India’s Constituent Assembly in New Delhi to deliver his famous ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech that marked the end of 200 years of British rule in the subcontinent:

"Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance."

Earlier that same day, with the last Viceroy Lord Mountbatten in attendance, leader of the All-India Muslim League Muhammad Ali Jinnah had addressed the newly-created Pakistan Constituent Assembly in Karachi with his own ‘Message to the Nation’...
