Historians in The National Archives
Historian article
The author of this article approached the Editor to give him a flavour of what might be found in The National Archives relating to political, secret service and civil service ‘interest’ in the views and activities of historians over the last century. It is certainly very significant that some of our important historians have attracted such interest. As always there is no real substitute for reading the original documents. However, alongside these insights, Dr Harvey discovered a report written by that most illustrious of Historical Association Presidents, G. M. Trevelyan, in 1915, where he reported to the Foreign Office at some length on attitudes in the United States which he had observed during a lecture tour, and we are printing the entirety of this report because we believe that it is a historical document of some significance.
