Triumphs Show 127: using the Anne Frank House's 'A Family Secret'
Teaching History feature: celebrating and sharing success
By Kimberley Anthony, published 31st May 2007
The Anne Frank House recently translated its comic book A Family Secret into English. By stressing the choices and dilemmas of ordinary people living in Amsterdam during the German Occupation, the comic seeks to revise the black and white ideas students hold of right and wrong. With five other history teachers from Britain, I attended a meeting at the House aimed at establishing our reactions to the material. How could it be used in Key Stage 3? How would our students respond to it? Was it ‘too Dutch?’
