Move Me On 131: Mentor struggling to help trainee learn to plan independently
Teaching History feature
Richard Baxter's mentor is struggling to know how to help him plan independently.
Richard Baxter is a relatively young trainee with a background in ancient history. He came to the PGCE course straight after completing his undergraduate degree, and is aware of his relative youth as well as what he perceives as gaping holes in his historical knowledge. He has a lovely manner with individual students, and his early experiences in school, acting as a teaching assistant and working with small groups were very positive, as indeed were his first few lessons, for which he followed very closely the suggestions given to him by his mentor or the other teachers with whom he was working. As that reliance on others' suggestions has continued, however, they have begun to lose patience with him.
