Chris Hill is struggling with essential management issues, which means that his excellent ideas (for enquiry questions and teaching strategies) tend to be dismissed by other teachers.
Chris Hill has moved into teaching after several years working in the charity sector with vulnerable adults. When he first arrived, his mentor and colleagues were impressed by his enthusiasm for history and the way in which he sought out reading suggestions to develop his subject knowledge. He was also keen to understand the particular demands of the school’s GCSE specification and exactly how the mark-schemes defined and rewarded students’ understanding of particular concepts. His mentor, Bridget, was encouraged by his critical evaluation of what was expected and felt excited to work with him. Unfortunately, as he began teaching, it became apparent that he really struggled to establish high expectations of students in the classroom...
