Lloyd George & Gladstone
Article
Lloyd George, who died sixty years ago on 26 March 1945, grew up and began his Parliamentary career in Queen Victoria's reign. In taking up a major Welsh issue, disestablishment of the Church of Wales, he memorably clashed with William Ewart Gladstone, perhaps the greatest of all Liberal Prime Ministers. Since John Grigg wrote The Young Lloyd George in 1973, more family papers have become available in the National Library of Wales and in the publications of Lloyd George's nephew, W.R.P. George. While not changing the basic picture of the clashes between the two Liberal leaders, these sources do throw some additional light on these events of the early 1890s. Welsh disestablishment eventually took place during Lloyd George's premiership on 31 March 1920. In taking on Gladstone Lloyd George was responding to a potent political image as well as to a very powerful and revered political leader.
