In 2001, it was foreseen that, as each year passes, the number of veterans of the D Day Landings diminish while those that are left would find it increasingly difficult to stand "on parade" and march: the contrast between the parades marking the 65^th anniversary of the Landings and the vibrant success of the 60^th anniversary was palpable. Simultaneously it was becoming obvious that without a visible activity to remind modern generations of the legacy the veterans gave the world the memory of the lives that were sacrificed for us would be lost.

Normandy Day offers a way of holding hard to the memory by attracting younger generations towards a family oriented social activity: namely a picnic where participants bring their own food and drinks and sit on a large tablecloth. It should take place every 6^th June in every country that was involved in the momentous military undertaking in 1944. In this way Normandy Day hopes to remind people that D Day brought together young men and citizens from many different countries to bring peace to a fractured world.

With simultaneous picnics already increasing in USA and Canada and with the first one to be realised in Saarbrucken Germany this year, the scope for increased international recognition and contact is here.

Accordingly, Normandy Day seeks therefore your support to achieve this celebration of our corporate legacy within your school where an education Key Skills package in contemporary history leads neatly to the 6^th June. What better way is there to end this learning with a related pupil and family social activity?
