The concept of the East London Mosque was one hundred years old in 2010.  It was eventually established in 1941 in Commercial Road, later moving to Fieldgate Street and then in 1985 to Whitechapel Road.  The mosque embodies the evolution of the Muslim community and the involvement with leading figures of British society to help develop a multicultural community.

Humayun Ansari is Director of the Centre for Minority Studies at Royal Holloway College, London, and the author of works on Muslims in the West.  He was awarded an OBE in 2002 for services to higher education and race relations.

Information on key figures mentioned in the minutes is given in Appendix I, and selected documents reproduced in Appendix VII.  There is a useful index.  It is in all a careful record of a significant institution in recent history.
