What does this series cover?
This webinar series will support your teaching of ‘past and present’ at the Early Years Foundation Stage. It will help you to make sense of curriculum frameworks in EYFS, consider what makes effective pedagogy at EYFS, and develop curriculum coherence and transition to Key Stage 1.

How is the series structured and delivered?
The series consists of three webinars. The live session dates are detailed below.
Session 1: Making sense of curriculum frameworks in EYFS
Wednesday 15 January 2025, 4pm–5pm
This webinar will explore ‘Understanding the World’ and its relationship to history education, understanding the child and their community, and making sense of chronology and progression in EYFS.
Session 2: Effective pedagogy for EYFS
Tuesday 28 January 2025, 4pm–5pm
This webinar will look at effective use of picture books to develop children’s historical vocabulary and their understanding of the past, and will explore thematic approaches for teaching ‘past and present'.
Session 3: Curriculum coherence and transition to Key Stage 1
Wednesday 12 February 2025, 4pm–5pm
This webinar will support you to ensure well-planned transition to Key Stage 1, and will give advice on planning for mixed-age Reception/Year 1 classes. It will reflect on developing a coherent history curriculum across all phases in your school.

Who is the series for?
The course is for anyone who teaches at Early Years Foundation Stage, as well as primary teachers and history subject leaders.

What are the learning outcomes?
This webinar series will enable you to:
- - understand effective approaches for teaching ‘past and present’ in EYFS
- - understand how to plan for effective phase transition from EYFS to Key Stage 1
- - understand how to integrate EYFS within your whole school curriculum for history

Who is leading the series?
The webinars will be led by Helen Crawford and Sue Temple.
Helen Crawford is a Senior Lecturer in Primary Education at the University of Northampton and current chair of the Historical Association’s primary committee. Before moving into Initial Teacher Education, Helen was an Early Years teacher, class teacher and senior leader in a range of school settings.
Sue Temple is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Cumbria, regular contributor to Primary History and an HA Quality Mark Assessor. Sue had a variety of roles before moving into Initial Teacher Education, including Early Years and Primary teacher, Nursery Headteacher and SEND teacher in a Pupil Referral Unit.

How do I take part?
The webinars will take place online over Zoom. While we strongly recommend participating live, if you are unable to attend for any reason a recording link will be made available. This will be emailed to all registered participants to access for a limited period.
